Thursday from the Stand.

Happy Thursday. If you’re booking dinner this week, start with Water Street — a European steakhouse just flipped the lights on in the old Rumpus Room, and I’m watching that room more closely than anything else right now.

Book This Weekend

High Stakes by Bartolotta — Downtown / Riverwalk. Opens today, Thu Sep 17, at 1030 N Water. European-inspired steakhouse upstairs; Peacock Lounge next door if you want the looser half of the night. Paul Bartolotta with Aaron Bickham and Ian Jones. The plate to hold in your head: the 45-day dry-aged bone-in ribeye. Who it’s for: anniversary-and-expense-account nights, visiting parents who expect a real steakhouse, anyone who wants Water Street to feel like a destination again. $$$$ · Dinner Tue–Thu 5–9, Fri–Sat 5–10 · Book on OpenTable. Opening night is the start of the kitchen’s story, not the end of it — go for the room and that ribeye, and let the rest sort itself over the next few weeks.

If Saturday at High Stakes is already gone, Il Ponte on Mason is the other downtown Friday/Saturday play.

What’s New

(Openings tracked this week via OnMilwaukee and the Journal Sentinel.)

Il Ponte — Downtown. Opened Tue Sep 15 at 818 E Mason. NY-style Italian / red sauce / handmade pasta — the more casual sibling to Lupi & Iris from Adam Siegel and Daria Aitken-Siegel, with chef Angel Otero and pastry from Courtney Beyer. About 150 seats, open kitchen, big bar. One plate: lasagna al forno. Who it’s for: Friday Italian without the formal Lupi reservation anxiety; groups that want pasta and a loud bar. $$$ · Book on Resy.

WELA Modern Thai — Third Ward. Soft-opened Sep 9 at 217 N Broadway. “Taste of Time” (say Way-lah). Chef/co-owner Somchok “Sam” Sansawas, with Nini Trick among the owners. One plate: duck breast in southern-style Rawang curry. Who it’s for: Third Ward nights when you want Thai that isn’t pad Thai on autopilot, and a room built for sharing. $$$ · Dinner Sun–Mon and Wed–Thu 4:30–10, Fri–Sat 4:30–10:30 (closed Tue) · Soft open often means shorter hours — confirm, then call or book through the restaurant.

What’s Great Right Now

EsterEv — Bay View, 2165 S Kinnickinnic. This is the nicer table for a random Wednesday when you don’t want opening-night roulette. I’ve eaten here — Dan Jacobs and Dan Van Rite’s room still feels like a neighborhood flex: Wed–Sat 5–9, à la carte, order how you want. One plate: the caviar tater tot. Monroe Briggs is in the kitchen. Who it’s for: date nights and “we should go somewhere good” texts that don’t need a new-room disclaimer. $$$$ · Book on OpenTable. Go.

The Board

Freshwater Food & Wine Festival — Sat–Sun Sep 19–20, Henry Maier Festival Park. $35 GA. Restaurant Row, wine regions, à la carte — not one tasting ticket to rule them all. Dan Jacobs, Elena Terry, Adam Pawlak, George Motz, Joe Sasto, and more are on the public chef list. Lake air and plate-hopping if that’s your Saturday.

If you’re chasing a weekend hold beyond the new rooms, put Freshwater or the Pérez dinner on your calendar before they fill — both move when people wait.

Lupi & Iris / Raúl Pérez — wine dinner Wed Sep 23, 6:30, $145. These sell when people wait. lupiandiris.com

Café Corazón (Bay View) — last regular day Oct 2, farewell Oct 3. Riverwest and Brown Deer stay open. If Bay View’s been your Corazón night, that’s the window.

Mara’s Grill — Guatemalan–Mexican, closes Sep 19 (rent). Edge of the nicer lane — fair to say — but a Friday goodbye is still a goodbye if it’s been your spot.

Ni Burmese — quietly closed. Tea leaf salad and kat kyi kaik people will miss. Noted so you don’t walk up to a dark door.

El Impostor — early October, West Allis, global tacos from the Rataczak / Camino orbit. Board it; don’t show up early.
